CHARACTER: Name: Fabian Ulrich Keller
Age: 30
D.O.B.: November 11th, 1979
Place of Birth: Berlin, Germany
Physical Description:
Fabian is a man of average height, standing at 5’11” – something that always bothered him, considering he’s just one inch short of being an even 6 feet tall. His hair is a sandy brown color, although when it’s exposed to sunlight it appears to be more blonde than anything…something he doesn’t have to worry about in Obsidian, considering how sunlight hardly ever peeks through the dark clouds that surround them on a daily basis. He has fair skin, but isn’t nearly as light as some of his other siblings.
Fabian’s intense and bright blue eyes are what draw the most attention when people first approach him. When he’s smiling, a very pleasant sight indeed, his pretty pools of aquamarine become full of life and warmth, and can make another dreary day seem much brighter. That brilliant smile of his also exposes his matching set of dimples, and even though they may give him a ‘boyish’ appearance, the rest of his features are masculine and strong, overpowering the small indents in his cheeks.
The oldest Keller child’s physique is just as complimentary to the masculine air Fabian gives off when he walks into a room. He isn’t stocky or bulky, but lean and slender with naturally toned muscles that can be felt even beneath the fabric of his clothing – usually a clean button down shirt paired with a tie (on occasion), a pair of slacks, and shoes that probably don’t hold a shine anymore.
Personality:
Fabian's personality is a bit of a contradiction. On the one hand, he likes being sociable. He'll introduce himself with a smile, and carry on a good conversation with someone for hours on end, even if he only just met them. On the other hand, the boy likes his alone time. He likes when things are quiet, so he can gather his thoughts, but when things are too quiet, he goes stir crazy. Maybe it came from living in a house with 8 other people, but complete and utter silence drives him absolutely nuts. He enjoys sitting by himself at coffee shops, listening to ambient noises, like the bustle of the workers while he skims a book. Just be mindful not to interrupt him while he's mid-sentence, because that's extremely irritating.
In a nut shell, if Fabian seems completely unoccupied, and is just sitting there looking bored out of his mind, it's safe to say you can approach him and try to make conversation. If he's in the middle of something, and clearly just wants to be alone and you come over to disturb him? That doesn't sit well with him, unless he knows you extremely well and is willing to put something down to make time for you.
That's a pretty vague overview about what kind of guy he is, but that doesn't cover all the bases. He's not a bad or mean person, but he can definitely have an attitude when something doesn't go his way, or if someone pisses him off. His outbursts aren't childish or immature, but are effective in portraying just how pissed off or annoyed he really is. If, for whatever reasons, he doesn't like you, you can be sure that you'll know it before you even have to ask - though he always needs a good reason to dislike someone.
Sexuality: Heterosexual
History:
Fabian was the first child born to Erich and Maja Keller, though he wasn't necessarily doted upon. Not to say he wasn't loved and cared for, but he wasn't spoiled like most first born children tend to be. His parents were absolutely thrilled to finally have a child of their own, but if one were to assume the boy was spoiled, they would be horribly mistaken. Erich and Maja made sure each of their children got the same amount of attention as their first born son, but it was hard for Fabian to not be a little jealous when Nadja was born. Sure, he wasn't spoiled, but there was no one around to share his parents' affection before she came along. Being a curious 3 year old, he would lift himself up to peek through the bars of her crib, scrunching his nose at her...only actually finding that he liked the little person with flailing legs making gurgling noises when she placed her hand on his face and giggled. The noise made Fabian grin before running off to tell his parents, insisting they follow him into the baby girl's nursery to show them what his little sister could do.
His parents didn't have it in them to tell him it wasn't all that impressive, that she was just being a baby, but were more focused on the fact that he seemed to be growing fond of the newest addition to their family.
Fabian was about to turn 4 when his entire world seemed to be flipped upside down. He helped his parents pack suitcases and boxes, only having a vague understanding of what was happening. All he knew was that he wasn’t happy about moving, because that meant leaving all his friends and having to live somewhere that wasn’t home. But, being an obedient boy, he did as his parents instructed, and made sure Nadja behaved (or tried to at least) while they flew over seas to Obsidian – a place that would hopefully create better lives for all of them.
Time went by, and eventually his second sibling was brought into the world – a tiny little thing by the name of ‘Elsie’. Fabian was 5 when his new sister arrived, and took to her a little quicker than he had to Nadja, only because he knew better now. He’ll never admit to it, but he knows that the bond between him and his oldest sister is just a little stronger than those that tie him together with the others…and because of this, he was absolutely mortified when he accidently caused her so much pain by playing around with a pair of handcuffs he had found on his way home from school one day when he was 7. Elsie was 3, and Nadja was 5, and he could still remember listening to the poor blonde cry and scream as she tried to yank her way out of the contraption that he had put on her. He was just playing around! He didn’t think she’d actually get hurt. He never wanted that! He searched frantically for the key that would set her free, but it was gone, and he had to face the consequences later on, tail between his legs as his father asked the dreaded question “How did this happen?!”
Only it was in German, so it sounded much angrier.
Fabian stepped up, head hanging low as he told the man what happened as Maja prepared their daughter for a trip to the hospital. His old man took the belt he was wearing and made sure to teach Fabian a lesson to never did anything so careless and stupid ever again – especially when it put one of his sisters at risk. The punishment was definitely earned, in Fabian’s opinion, and even though it hurt to sit for a couple of days, it was drilled into his head to this day that his younger sisters (and eventually brothers) needed his protection, because there were more people out in the world who could hurt them. He didn’t need to be added to that list.
Fabian grew up into an intelligent young man, acting as a wonderful role model for his younger siblings. His nose was almost always stuck in a book, whether it was in German or English, though his second language was something that took him a while to adjust to. Nadja was too young to know how to speak when they moved from Germany, but Fabian was at that stage in his life where all he wanted to do was talk, and being told that everything he had been taught had to be pushed to the side in order to learn something else? That wasn’t something he liked very much. Most of the time, because he knew he couldn’t speak his own language, he would write it. He’d write in his journal every night, whether it be a log of how his day had gone, or even a short story or two. Practicing this talent made him become better at it over the years, and even now it’s likely you’ll catch Fabian sitting in a corner of a café, jotting something down in one of his leather-bound books…but good luck trying to read them, if he even gives you the chance to try.
Because of his intellect, he got good grades in school, but wasn’t able to afford a higher education. The first job he ever got was as a bus boy at ‘The End Café’, liking that on his breaks he could enjoy a cup of coffee and a pastry while jotting down his thoughts on paper. He kept his job there for a good 6 years before an application at The Onyx Museum was accepted, paying twice as much as he was making at the French coffee shop. He would have loved to stay, but he had to think about his family, and how the money he would be making would be spent. So, after giving his 2 weeks, he moved over to the Museum, working in the library behind a desk. As soon as he got there, he was absolutely thrilled about the move, since now he got to sit and write all day when there wasn’t someone who needed to be helped, and he got to look through the books. It was basically a dream job…except for his boss, who seemed to look down his nose at Fabian, just because he was German. The only reason he had been able to secure a job like the one he has despite his nationality was because he knew someone who worked within the Museum – an old high school friend whose father was one of the higher ups in management.
It’s good to know people.
Even though he holds a rather well-paying job, more than half of it is split between his younger brothers so they could attend college, a luxury he and Nadja never had. The rest is spent on rent, sharing an apartment with his two sisters since none of them could possibly afford one on their own. The living conditions are definitely restricting, to all of them, but when they aren’t too concerned about having their privacy (which is most of the time), they enjoy the company of family.
Special Skills/Abilities:
Bi-lingual - German and English (fluently)
Handy man - If it's broken, there's a good chance Fabian can fix it...and if he can't, you can be damn sure he's going to read up on how to do it, and do it well. So far he can fix most household appliances, and knows his way around a car.
Personal Weaknesses:
Chronic Insomnia - Ever since he was a kid, Fabian has had trouble falling asleep. He often takes sleeping medication, just to make sure he can get through the night without tossing and turning for hours at a time. He loses a lot of sleep due to stress now that he's older, but it's always been a big problem for him. You can usually tell when he hasn't slept properly (or at all) in a few days by the rings beneath his eyes.
Taphephobia - Fear of cemeteries or being buried alive. When he was 11, he and a friend decided to go to a cemetery on Halloween...and the poor kid fell into a fresh grave, and hasn't been the same since. Thankfully there wasn't a coffin inside of it yet, but the feeling of being 6 feet deep in a ditch and having to climb his way out of someone elses' grave scarred the boy for life.
Allergic to shellfish - It's an allergy that formed later on in life, much to his chagrin. He used to love baked clams, or shrimp cocktail, and now he isn't able to eat any of it. He was at a Christmas party eating clam chowder when he started to feel extremely sick, and his throat closed up. A trip to the hospital was in need, and he was devastated when he found out that the crustacean was the cause of his illness.
Personal Strengths:
Protective - Being the oldest of 6 children, it's not surprising that the man watches over his younger siblings like a damn hawk. He gives them their space and privacy (for the most part), but he's the first one that will be by their side and jump to their defense whenever they're in any sort of trouble.
Determined - Aint no mountain high enough... You know how it goes. If Fabian sets his mind to something, there's nothing that's going to get in his way.
Highly Intelligent - Despite the fact that he wasn't able to go to college, Fabian still took the SAT's and scored a *1560
(*The test was taken in '97, when SAT scores only went up to 1600.)
